Change coaching: it really can change your life

Updated: Oct 30

Picture of a beautiful butterfly on someone's hand

“There have been times, lately, when I dearly wished that I could change the past. Well, I can’t, but I can change the present, so that when it becomes the past it will turn out to be a past worth having.” Terry Pratchett, I Shall Wear Midnight

When I was a union activist, members often asked me why other people weren’t helping them to do something. For example:

  • Why wasn’t their manager helping them with their careers?

  • Why weren’t their colleagues doing a better job of acknowledging their contributions?

  • Why weren’t they being invited to key meetings?

What struck me then was just how passive these people were. I genuinely couldn’t understand why they weren’t just doing these things for themselves. If it was important to them, why were they holding back? So I’d ask them what they were doing about it.

The answer? Not so much.

I realised I wanted to do something to help these people break out of their passivity and take control. It’s one of the reasons I started the women’s network at Birkbeck, University of London - I wanted to find ways to empower the women around me and give them the support and training they needed to start taking charge of their own career paths. The women's network definitely made a difference - and continues to do so.

But I’m not done yet, and I’m so excited about the next stage in my career. As a qualified coach, I want to empower more people to make change happen in their lives.

What exactly does that mean, you say? Read on, my friends.

What is change coaching anyway?

Change coaching empowers you to navigate transitions, overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

By providing guidance, support and actionable strategies, change coaches offer you the opportunity to unlock your potential, embrace new perspectives and make meaningful progress in your personal and professional lives.

Here’s just some of the things that change coaching can deliver.

1. Clarity and direction

This type of coaching can help you gain clarity about your goals, dreams and the changes you wish to implement.

Many people feel overwhelmed or stuck, unsure of where to start or how to proceed. We can help you to define your vision, set clear objectives and develop a roadmap to achieve your goals.

This sense of direction creates a foundation for success, allowing you to move forward with confidence and purpose.

2. Overcoming obstacles and limiting beliefs

Change coaching helps you identify and overcome the obstacles and limiting beliefs that get in the way of your progress.

Through guided reflection and questioning, we help clients recognise self-imposed barriers, negative thought patterns or fears that may be holding them back.

By addressing these challenges, you can develop a more empowering mindset, which enables you to take action and make lasting changes in their lives.

3. Personalised support and accountability

A key advantage of change coaching is the personalised support it offers.

Unlike generic advice or self-help strategies, change coaching is tailored to your unique needs, circumstances and goals. We provide a safe, non-judgmental space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings, offering encouragement and constructive feedback along the way.

But we also hold you accountable for your actions, ensuring you stay committed to your goals and make consistent progress.

4. Improved confidence and resilience

As you work through their challenges and achieve small victories, you will build confidence and resilience.

Change coaching encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones, try new approaches  and learn from setbacks. This process fosters a growth mindset, helping you develop the resilience needed to navigate future changes with greater ease and adaptability.

5. Long-term transformation

Ultimately, change coaching goes beyond short-term fixes and promotes long-term transformation.

By equipping you with practical tools, strategies and insights, as well as helping you uncover the realm of possibility, change coaching empowers you to continue making positive changes even after the coaching relationship ends. This lasting impact is one of the most valuable outcomes, as clients develop the skills and mindset needed to thrive in all areas of life.
